To explore practical yet ecologically and socially robust approaches to implement nature based solutions along supply chains, we have set up a social venture spin out of Oxford University Innovation: Nature-based Insights. The NbI team are developing a innovative NbI Analytical Framework, supported by a quantitative model, to provide the evidence for companies to monitor their impacts and dependencies on biodiversity; set evidence-based targets; and design a socially just biodiversity strategy relevant to the context of the landscapes they source commodities from. When it comes to land management in commodity landscapes, we prioritise avoiding deforestation, conversion of natural ecosystems, and associated human rights infringements. The NbI Analytical Framework provides the evidence needed for companies and local stakeholders to co-design a strategy to reduce emissions, enhance carbon sinks, increase biodiversity, and improve human wellbeing in the commodity landscapes they invest in.
