Interests and expertise
I am a Researcher in the MSPO–Oxford Sustainable Palm Oil Policy & Innovation Lab at the Smith School for Enterprise and the Environment (Department of Geography) at the University of Oxford. I am interested in sustainability challenges in food systems and finding practical solutions to complex problems that benefit people and the planet.
Background
I completed my PhD about the carbon cycle of oil palm plantations growing on peat soils at the University of Aberdeen. This led me to spend two years living in Sarawak, Malaysia. Whilst at the University of Aberdeen, I supported the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land as a Chapter Scientist on Chapter Six of the report. I then worked for ADAS for four years as a Sustainable Agriculture Consultant, delivering bespoke projects on carbon, nitrogen and water cycles across the UK and international supply chains for a range of public-sector and private-sector clients.
More recently I have completed two postdoctoral positions at the University of Oxford. Firstly, I worked with the HESTIA team at the Oxford Martin School on land use change and the associated environmental impacts of agriculture-driven deforestation. Secondly, I contributed to the FOODCoST Horizon project with the Food Systems Transformation team at the Environmental Change Institute. Here, I focused on the environmental, health, economic, and social impacts of food systems from production to consumption.
