UK climate commitments to kickstart Climate Week NYC
The UK is aiming to lead in climate policy in the run-up to COP26

Climate Week NYC is taking place from 21st to 27th September; it’s the biggest climate summit of the year and will focus on how we can address climate change as we recover from COVID-19.

Alok Sharma, COP26 President, has made the following announcements to kickstart the week:

  • Race to Zero is a global campaign for a zero-carbon world – as of now, 22 regions, 452 cities, 1,128 businesses, 549 universities and 45 major investors have joined; this includes Facebook, Ford, and LafargeHolcim, the largest cement company globally.
  • COP26 Energy Transition Council – this a newly launched council of political, financial and technical power sector leaders, which will help advance the global transition to clean energy.
  • The UK government has invested £50 million in a new Clean Energy Innovation Facility to support clean energy technologies in developing countries.
