NbSI Research Fellow, Dr Aline Soterroni, spoke at Paris Amazon Week, addressing the pathways and challenges towards achieving zero deforestation in the Amazon, and pressing the need for a new socioeconomic model.
Aline highlighted points of alignment between WRI Brazil’s New Economy for the Amazon study, and her paper Nature-based solutions are critical for putting Brazil on track towards net-zero emissions by 2050, sharing three important conclusions:
- Without controlling deforestation, Brazil will fail to meet its short-term Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets.
- Controlling illegal deforestation alone will not be enough to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. While Nature-based Solutions (NbS) could contribute to nearly 80% of Brazil’s net-zero goal, eliminating both illegal and legal deforestation, exceeding the 12 million hectares target for native vegetation restoration, and accelerating low-carbon agriculture are crucial.
- The costs of keeping the forest standing and scaling NbS will be significantly lower than the financial toll associated with the impacts of climate change.
By prioritising ecosystem conservation and balance, Brazil can reduce carbon emissions quickly and adaptively, while also supporting resilience and generating benefits for both biodiversity and human well-being.
