Global call for nature-based solutions scale-up

Together with leading figures from business, climate change policy, academia and environmental NGOs, we have signed an open letter calling for governments and organisations globally to ‘take Nature-based Solutions to scale’ in the wake of the pandemic. The letter highlights the four key guidelines for successful and just nature-based solutions, which the NbS Initiative released this January:

  1. NbS are not a substitute for cutting greenhouse gas emissions
  2. NbS must protect and/or restore a wide range of ecosystems
  3. NbS must be socially responsible, with full engagement and consent of Indigenous and local communities
  4. NbS must sustain, enhance or support biodiversity

As nations recover from the effects of COVID-19, we must recognise the indispensable role of NbS for creating jobs and stimulating the economy, whilst enabling food security, adaptation to climate change and carbon sequestration. As we move into the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, and follow through initiatives such as Trillion Trees and the Bonn Challenge, we must use this as an opportunity to implement evidence-based NbS at scale.

We will be discussing the four guiding principles for successful, sustainable NbS, and how finance and governance can be used to implement them, at our Digital Dialogues virtual event in July this year; registration is open, so please do join the conversation.
